Cobalt Powder
Cobalt powder is a kind of metal powder with gray appearance. Cobalt powder is soluble in acid, magnetic and easy to oxidize in humid air. According to different production processes, cobalt powder can be divided into water atomized cobalt powder, reduced cobalt powder, electrolytic cobalt powder, etc.
Water Atomized Cobalt Powder
Production process of water atomized cobalt powder: after the cobalt plate is melted in the medium frequency induction melting furnace, stand for a moment, start the high-pressure water atomization pulverizing device when standing, and then pour the metal cobalt liquid into the leakage bag. A leakage nozzle is installed at the bottom of the leakage bag to control the size of the metal liquid flow. The metal cobalt liquid enters the atomization device after passing through the leakage nozzle and melting through the sealing sheet. Under the impact of high-pressure water flow from the ring hole (with a speed of 70 ~ 100M / s), it is broken into fine liquid beads and condensed rapidly to form a mixture of water and powder. Under the action of centrifugal force, the solid and liquid are separated. The cobalt powder is concentrated and discharged through the powder discharge port, and the collected wet powder is the finished cobalt powder after dehydration, drying and screening.
Reduced Cobalt Powder
Reduced cobalt powder is produced from cobalt oxalate. There are three ways to reduce cobalt powder: first, cobalt oxalate is calcined into oxide and then reduced with hydrogen; Second, one-step reduction with hydrogen; The third is thermal dissociation.
The cobalt powder produced by reduction method not only reduces the cost and pollution, but also the purity of cobalt powder is 99.9% and the average particle size is 1 μ m. It is very suitable for cemented carbide production and is very beneficial to improve the quality of cemented carbide products.
Electrolytic Cobalt Powder
Preparation of metal cobalt powder by electrolytic method: when direct current is applied to the aqueous solution containing cobalt ions, cobalt ions are deposited by cathodic discharge. Cobalt ions are generally supplied by an anode made of electrolytic cobalt metal and an electrolyte containing a salt of cobalt metal. The movement of cobalt ions to the cathode depends on diffusion, convection and migration. The preparation of electrolytic cobalt powder is closely related to temperature, electrolyte composition, solution viscosity and ion size.

This not only puts forward higher requirements for the chemical composition of cobalt powder, but also puts forward strict requirements for the physical properties of cobalt powder, such as particle size, particle size distribution and crystal morphology. Generally speaking, cobalt powder for cemented carbide requires finer and finer particle size (particle size is generally less than 1.5 μm) , the morphology is spherical or quasi spherical, and the particle size distribution is normal distribution.
Meanwhile, cobalt powder for cemented carbide needs a high purity. Why? ① pure cobalt can completely infiltrate tungsten carbide and has a high holding force on tungsten carbide, so as to improve the strength of cemented carbide. ② If there exist other impurities in cobalt powder, such as lead, silicon, calcium and sulfur, it will affect the microstructure and properties of the alloy during sintering.
